Joan Whitecalf

I am currently an unretired horse trainer. I have been a

wide formant printer, wildlife rehabilitator, overhead crane

operator, forklift operator, counsellor for a women’s

shelter, home care staff, and most recently- bushwhacker.

The unretired horse trainer is current as I am helping

neighbors with their horses that need care and riding. I

thought that my horse training days were long gone but

once a trainer always a trainer, I guess! Bushwacking is

what I call my walks into the trees. Forest bathing is the

newest term for what I have always done.

Single parent radical leftwing lesbian activist are also

some descriptives used to describe myself. Single parents

might be replaced with Grandmother (Grammie) now. My

activism has included co-hosting “Gaywire” a weekly radio

show with Kristy Harcourt, to discuss and present issues

relevant to the queer community. I was also fortunate to

be part of a gay and lesbian support group that ran for two

years in Camrose AB. I wrote for a number of years for the

Womonspace newsletter. Currently I am a settler in the

countryside of Gull Lake, Alberta, and I’m surrounded by

the beauty of treaty 6 and 7 lands.

I was invited in 2019 to be a part of the Edmonton

Pride Seniors group. Our most pressing project is the

building of a queer seniors retirement facility. I feel the

need to have a safe space for us to live out our golden

years is very important and urgently needed.
